Students are strongly encouraged to take private lessons on their instruments. The following is a list of instructors with comments initiated by the instructors themselves. Long Reach High School makes no claims on the abilities of any of these instructors. We rely on feedback from the instructors to keep the list current. If you have any comment about this list, find some inaccurate information, or if you are an instructor that would like to be added to the list, let us know by Emailing Us.
There are instructors that we have lost contact with and perhaps are no longer teaching or have left the area. These are still on the list for now. The general rule is that if there is an email address listed, we have made contact with them and they are still teaching.
We really make no claims on the abilities of any of these instructors, but it is clear by gathering this information that there is an abundant amount of musical talent that exists in the area. We encourage you to take advantage of it.

Mr. Holmes teaches full time in a home studio at 6586 Dovecote Drive in Columbia, MD 21044. The studio normally has around 50 students each year. He has been teaching in Columbia since the Peabody Prep was here the first time - starting in 1969. He has a special interest in injury prevention. One notable additional feature of this studio is the lab. The students work on theory knowledge, ear training, rhythm, and are encouraged to do compositions using computer software and a Tap Master machine. Several piano teachers do a bit of this but no other flute instructor that I know of does anything similar. The student stays in the studio for about half an hour in addition to the regular lesson. Another regular feature is the 4 or 5 performance classes (parents invited to 2 of these) and a more formal end of year recital to which everybody can come. Lessons are available for 35 minutes, 50 minutes, or an hour PLUS lab time. Cost is $48 per hour of private instruction. Each lab session is $6.50. Payments are by the month in advance during the school year. I am teaching any time I am home in the summer. His flute students are expected to perform in solo and ensemble festivals and take the MSMTA written theory exam each year - it's graded, levels 1 through 12. They have the option of a number of additional performance possibilities through the various associations and a number each year take part in the Trinity College London Musical Examinations program - held locally in May. His piano students are encouraged to find people to accompany for solo and ensemble festivals and to use their skills in church, school, and more. Another "specialty" is giving high school students who intend to major in music on an instrument that is not piano a practical introduction to piano and theory/ear training so they are ahead of their peers when they start college work. These kids are usually a major pleasure!
